Solve the where–is–it behind British whodunits. Follow the trail of Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), Idris Elba (Luther) and others through the colorful locations where they filmed before they were stars.
Follow Sherlock In and Out of London | England
Retrace Benedict Cumberbatch’s steps to track down scenes from BBC’s Sherlock. In London, there’s Speedy’s Café (187 North Gower Street, near Euston station), which doubles as the iconic 221B Baker Street; Russell Square Gardens; and Trafalgar Square. The city of Bristol has also filled in for Victorian London. In one episode, Cathedral Square serves as the exterior of an opium den, while the historic homes of King Street are often used for Baker Street filming. For more spots, check online for the movie maps created by the Bristol Film Office.
For those who love the books as much as the show, be sure to add a stop at the Sherlock Holmes Museum on Baker Street.
Sleuth Broadchurch Locations | Dorset, England
Been binge–watching Broadchurch on Netflix? The show, featuring detectives Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) cracking cases somewhere in southwest England, is actually shot in West Bay. Series creator Chris Chibnail was inspired by the area’s dramatic cliffs and sprawling beaches and has called Broadchurch “a love letter to the scenery.” If you go, follow the Broadchurch Trail, created by the local tourism board, to suss out past and future locations.
Find Doctor Who | Cardiff, Wales
Of course we didn’t forget about the Doctor Who fans. The Doctor Who Experience lets you journey to the heart of the TARDIS, and come face to face with brand–new monsters created just for you. After your journey, check out the Gallifrey Museum and geek out to the largest collection of Doctor Who costumes, sets and props from the TV show’s iconic past and present
Visit Luther’s Neighborhood | London, England
If you’re hoping to spot Luther star Idris Elba during your next visit, chances are he’d be in the East End, in and around the now–trendy Shoreditch area in Hackney, where the studio used for much of the filming is located. The production shoots exteriors on streets such as Kingsland Road, Haberdasher Street, Clifton Street, Wilton Way and Eleanor Road. Southwark’s 1777 Georgian Trinity Church Square is another recent location, and Elba’s last go–around as Luther took him to Islington’s Stafford Cripps Estate, used to stage an impressive explosion.
Travel with Outlander | Scotland
We know, we know, it’s not a detective show. But the mega–popular Outlander has won raves among fans and critics alike. The time–travel drama is filmed entirely in Scotland and makes good use of sites like Doune Castle (Castle Leoch in the series) in Stirling, and Cairngorms National Park, seen in the opening credits.
